Overview
What is Philmont? Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America's
largest national high-adventure base. It covers 137,000 acres -
about 214 square miles - of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre
de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern
New Mexico. Thirty-four staffed camps and 55 trail camps are operated
by the ranch. Philmont has high mountains dominating rough terrain
with elevations ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet.
Each 12-day expedition provides an unforgettable adventure in sky-high
backpacking country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails.
Program features combine the best of the Old West - horseback riding,
burro packing, gold panning, chuckwagon dinners, and interpretive
history - with exciting challenges for today, such as rock climbing,
burro racing, mountain biking, and .30-06 rifle shooting. It's an
unbeatable recipe for fast-moving fun and the outdoors.

website.
Training
Be Prepared.
In preparation for our trek, crew members are encouraged to begin
a rigorous personal fitness program nine months before the trip.
Training should include a variety of aerobic exercises and practice
hikes. Plan to exercise 30 to 60 minutes three to five times a week.
Running, cycling, and swimming are strongly advised to help prepare
the crew members for physical exertion at high altitudes. Many of
our youth crew members are actively engaged in a wide range of sports
and athletic programs.
Our crew will participate in several preparatory hikes at our local
BSA camps. Each shakedown will be a two-night campout and we will
backpack 15 miles. Two of the shakedowns will include a service
project.
In February we will hike the SR2 trail at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch
and perfect compass skills. In April we will hike the Governors
Trail at Camp Meisenbach where we get to utilize the new Philmont
Training Trail Camps. Our final shakedown is scheduled in May for
the Cross Timbers Trail on Lake Texoma for final fine tuning.
